In partnership with the Terang and Mortlake Health Service, 103-year-old Early Parenting Centre Tweddle Child & Family Health Service is bringing early parenting support to families across the Western District of Victoria.

Delivered by an experienced Registered Nurse with Early Parenting experience the Terang Day Stay Program operates every Tuesday from 9am – 4pm for parents of babies and children up to age 3.

More than just sleep support for parents of babies and toddlers

Parents who access the service, are often seeking support with sleep and settling but there are many other aspects of parenting the program can provide education for such as health and well-being, behaviour, attachment and other challenges relating to parenting a baby or toddler.

Tweddle Deputy Director of Nursing-Community Programs Le Ann Williams said that it was important to offer specialist early parenting support for regional families.

“Parents often phone us initially so they can book a Day Stay program and get some trusted and experienced support with sleep and settling. From there we find they are keen to talk about other aspects of parenting. This includes feeding and mealtimes, returning to the workforce, adjusting to parenting and routines, attachment and reading cues and toddler behaviour.” she said.

Terang and Mortlake Health Service and Tweddle Partnership

Tweddle Director of Clinical Services and Nursing Kirsty Evans said that the partnership with Terang and Mortlake Health Service was important as it strengthened local services for parents. She said that all Tweddle programs had a focus on infant health, development, and the promotion of attachment relationships.

“Attending a day stay program enables practitioners to work alongside parents, look at the whole 24-hour cycle and provide practical strategies to empower parents to do the best they can.” she said.

Helping parents closer to home

Terang Day Stay Nurse Cindy Moloney said: “New parents face many barriers to seeking support, and one of them is often travel, especially if they have more than one child. Our Terang Day Stay provides the best support for parents of babies and toddlers close to home.”
