Breastfeeding Support Service

Tweddle’s Breastfeeding Project coordinator and lactation consultant Narelle Dwyer was impressed by a recent Age online article looking at the benefits of ‘Kangaroo Care’, the science of mother and baby skin to skin care.  Narelle, who has spent years witnessing the benefits of ‘Kangaroo Care’ agreed, “ The baby feels safe and secure against the mother’s skin, comforted by the familiar orchestra of sounds from the mother’s body”

There is much evidence that shows 'Kangaroo mother care' enhances baby's blood oxygen levels and helps regulate their temperature" said Narelle.  "If a baby is cold a mother's temperature will increase 1-2 degrees to warm her infant and if the baby is warm, the mother's temperature will decrease to help cool the baby.  KMC also stabilizes the baby's heart rate and blood pressure".

Studies show that Kangaroo care enhances bonding at a time when giving birth to a small, premature or sick infant can be a devastating experience for the mother and father.  Being able to nurture and hold their infant, allowing nourishment from the breast where possible, can east the traumatic and emotional effects of such an experience.
