Tweddle joins Council for Family Strengthening Strategy launch

Posted by Kerrie Gottliebsen | 23/06/15

Tweddle were honoured to attend the launch of the Maribyrnong City Council ‘Family Strengthening Strategy 2015-2018’ which outlined the Council’s commitment to supporting parents and strengthening families who are raising young children and young people across the municipality. The Strategy includes ‘partnering with Tweddle to develop a new model for delivering groups for new parents’ as a priority action.

The launch at the Footscray Town Hall included guest speaker Victorian Commissioner for Children and Young People, Bernie Geary.  Bernie reminded everyone that there is no greater love that the one which a child has for their parent and that there has never been a greater need for nurturing and guiding families with complex family dynamics.

Tweddle CEO Jacquie O’Brien agreed with Bernie’s statement that we have to be with parents on their terms. “Families coming to Tweddle are usually experiencing great distress including family violence. The Victorian Commissioner for Children and Young People reminded us that  violence will impact the whole lifecycle of a child, from pregnancy into adulthood”

Bernie also spoke of the importance of engaging fathers in the early years. Tweddle’s father inclusive programs and work with Sons of the West will continue to highlight the importance of dads and positive male role models in the lives of children.

Tweddle looks forward to our continued work with the City of Maribyrnong to ensure parents and families have the necessary supports so that children can expect the best outcomes in life.
