Managing stress over the holiday period

Posted by Kerrie Gottliebsen | 16/12/14

The holiday period  can be a very stressful time for many families.  Financial and time pressures, step-family challenges, isolation, family tensions, separation and divorce or bereavement  can make for a time of stress and anxiety which may impact on enjoying time with our families.

Tweddle Psychologist Nikki Zerman agrees that there are significant difficulties experienced by many families at this time of year. “During the holiday period we tend to get caught up with wanting to please everyone and ensuring everything goes perfectly.  The reality is this isn’t possible.  It’s best to pick one or two things you’d like to focus on at this time and accept that you can’t control or be responsible for everything”

Ways to help reduce stress include having realistic expectations of yourself and others, mindfulness meditation techniques and getting plenty of rest.  Ms Zerman spoke about taking a preventative approach to stressful situations.  “It’s important to remember that, at this time, other friends and family members may also be under stress. Avoiding overindulging in alcohol helps, which often contributes to or cause disagreements”

Ms Zerman highlighted the importance of seeking help during periods of stress.  “If you’re feeling overwhelmed or having difficulties coping, remember that there are many 24 hour help lines available including LifeLine and Beyond Blue’s 24 hour helpline"  Tweddle will be closed over the festive period from Friday 19th December and reopen on January 5th 2015. We wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday season and New Year.
